McKayla Maroney, now 22 years old and a retired American artistic gymnast, stated that Larry Nassar, the former USA Gymnastics national team doctor, had molested the young woman on her very first visit to the famed Karolyi ranch; the USA Gymnastics National Team training center located at Walker County, Texas. The decorated Olympian, who had won multiple medals including a gold throughout the course of her illustrious career and was a member of the “Fierce Five” at the 2012 Summer Olympics, also claimed that Nassar would continue his vile and repulsive acts upon her “hundreds of times” over the course of the next five years. After NBC News’ Savannah Guthrie conducted an exclusive interview with Maroney for a special investigative edition of “Dateline” which is set to air this upcoming Sunday night at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT, McKayla stated the following: “He said that nobody would understand this and the sacrifice that it takes to get to the Olympics. So you can’t tell people this.” Nassar, now a convicted serial child molester, is set to be released from federal prison, at the earliest, on March 23, 2069, by which time he would be 105 years old. After disclosing information as to how she was a victim in this awful ordeal, Maroney went into vivid detail recalling the memories of those traumatic events and the repeated nature by which they occurred: “He told me he was going to do a checkup on me and that was the first day I was abused.” Larry admittedly told the court that he penetrated his patients with ungloved hands under the guise of medical treatment, which then raised the question as to whether powerful institutions could have done more to stop him. A U.S. Senate subcommittee was held this past Wednesday on how to prevent similar situations from arising and also on how to protect Olympic athletes by continuously taking testimony from victims in several sports across the athletic landscape. To recapitulate the primary points of the situation at hand, I feel absolutely awful that McKayla Maroney and several others were subject to Nassar’s nauseating and deplorable actions, and hope that the USA Gymnastics Organization takes the steps necessary in order to prevent their athletes from being subject to these despicable crimes.
